The Columbus School of Law was founded in 1898 as part of the Catholic University of America. It was initially known as the School of Law and Diplomacy, and it was one of the first law schools in the United States to offer a combined law and diplomacy program.

The school was renamed the Columbus School of Law in 1954, in honor of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus.
